Photographing Africa's "Flying Sharks"

The phenomenon is best seen near Seal Island, a crowded seal colony near Cape Town, South Africa. There, great whites and other sharks congregate to feed on the pinnipeds.

When seals cross deep water to approach or leave their island sanctuary, the waiting sharks, swimming at depth, hurtle themselves with great strength toward the animals at the surface. The ferocity and momentum of the ascent often results in both predator and prey exploding out of the ocean like a cork from a champagne bottle—a moment that the Fallowses have caught on film for magazines, exhibits, and television documentaries seen all over the world.

Throwing Tables Out the Window

Look Ma, No Tables!

Those who were at Digital Design World in Seattle this year saw me present a session titled, “No More Tables, CSS Layout Techniques”. In that session, we reviewed proper use of tables, and a few pointers for styling them with CSS. Then we turned to tableless layout, reviewing examples and an overview of the two basic approaches (positioning and floats).

How-To Turn your iPod in to a Universal Infrared Remote Control

Sometimes, you look around at all these gadgets and in a rare moment of inspiration or madness, you look at them all a little different— connected in a way they are currently not, but perhaps should be, or at least “could” be. There might not be anything “new” but there are countless combinations of disparate technologies, and we think this is a great example of combining a couple of those.

Dinner With Bill Gates

So, in response to the multitude of email messages I got asking for more juicy details on what it's like to eat dinner with Bill Gates, I figured I should write the comprehensive posting about said topic. So, without further deliberation, I've broken down my account into a few sections: The Experience, The House, The Man, and The Coolest Part. Here goes...

Spamming for Dummies

Let's call him Stan. Our entirely fictitious character begins his work day, as many of us do, by opening his email client and checking for new messages. As usual, a few legitimate emails are hidden amongst a deluge of spam, one of which catches his eye. ‘2 Million Email Addresses for $19.95’

Already a keen businessman, Stan doesn't take long to realise that the designer jewellery he's selling from his website could move off the shelves a lot faster if he could reach two million people with each advertisement.

Thai elephants anticipate jumbo CD sales

Not satisfied with healthy sales in the United States from their first CD, Thailand's Elephant Orchestra has gone back to the recording studio to turn out more jumbo hits

Richard Lair, of Thailand's Elephant Conservation Centre, says the "improvised jazz" created by the new, enlarged line-up of 12 jamming pachyderms - the original band only had five - is currently being mixed in New York.

Hair and Lip Politics

I can guarantee that if a pollster called me to ask which presidential candidate I find more kissable, I'd ask if this was a crank call, and even if it wasn't, I'd hang up. I'd assume that people who ask random strangers about their kissing preferences must assume the risk of a smack in the kisser. Perhaps that's one reason we leave such work to professionally trained pollsters.
