SPACE RACE LIFTS OFF

Motels for miles around will be filled. Campers will line the roads in competition for the best viewing spot. Traffic will be a mess. It's not the old Cape Canaveral, but it will seem like it. CNN will broadcast live the first attempt to launch a general aviation pilot into space out of Mojave, California. The launch aircraft with SpaceShipOne underneath will taxi from its hangar at 6:30 a.m. Pacific time on Monday, June 21. The goal is 328,084 feet (100 kilometers), the altitude at which "space" officially begins. Monday's flight will not orbit the Earth, however. SpaceShipOne, a craft built by Burt Rutan and the team of Vulcan, Inc., funded by Vulcan owner Paul G. Allen, made it to 211,400 feet on May 13. There are 500 media representatives signed up to cover Monday's event.

Despite its toy looks, SpaceShipOne is a serious craft ready for blast off

The fat nose covered with blue stars and the pea-shaped port holes make SpaceShipOne seem more like an oversized toy than a serious rocket plane -- but on Monday this craft will attempt to make the world's first private space trip.

The craft, which will aim to rise more than 100 kilometers (62 miles) above the earth's surface traveling at more than three times the speed of sound, was dreamed up by Burt Rutan, 61, a US engineer who had already worked on the "Voyager," which in 1986 became the first plane to fly around the world without stopping or refueling.

Police unscramble puzzling 'muti egg mystery'

Grassy Park police have discovered a unique "hit list" - the names of local policemen written on five eggs and wrapped in what appeared to be muti.

Police believe the eggs and muti may well be part of an elaborate witchcraft scheme by criminals who are prepared to try anything to derail anti-crime operations in the area. Police on Friday raided a house in Seventh Avenue, Grassy Park, where they discovered the eggs.

Scolari says Portugal like an ugly girlfriend

Spending 20 days with the Portuguese team this month was like seeing a girlfriend in the harsh morning light for the first time and realising she was ugly, coach Luiz Felipe Scolari says.

Scolari spent 18 months training his side for the European Championship, then made three significant changes to his team for last Wednesday's 2-0 win over Russia after they lost 2-1 to Greece in their opening match.
