European Shuttle Prototype Lands Safely


An unmanned prototype of a European space shuttle glided safely back to Earth after being dropped from nearly 8,000 feet up by a helicopter. Guided by Global Positioning System satellites, the German-designed EADS Phoenix was dropped by a heavy-duty helicopter over Sweden at 9:45 a.m. Saturday and "landed perfectly" 90 seconds later on a test runway north of Stockholm, a project spokeswoman said.

New picture and military critics increase pressure on Bush

CHAIN OF COMMAND


IIn his devastating report on conditions at Abu Ghraib prison, in Iraq, Major General Antonio M. Taguba singled out only three military men for praise. One of them, Master-at-Arms William J. Kimbro, a Navy dog handler, should be commended, Taguba wrote, because he “knew his duties and refused to participate in improper interrogations despite significant pressure from the MI”—military intelligence—“personnel at Abu Ghraib.” Elsewhere in the report it became clear what Kimbro would not do: American soldiers, Taguba said, used “military working dogs to frighten and intimidate detainees with threats of attack, and in one instance actually biting a detainee.”

Black Madonna dies in coma


One of South Africa's most popular singers, Brenda Fassie, has died in a Johannesburg's hospital aged 39.

Fassie, known as the girl with the golden voice, was taken to the hospital two weeks ago with brain damage following a heart attack.

Israel raids Gaza tunnel diggers


The Israeli military say they caught a group of Palestinians trying to dig a tunnel from the Gaza Strip into neighbouring Egyptian territory.

The operation by the army was part of an ongoing campaign that Israel wages against tunnel diggers at the southern end of the Strip.
