New giant squid predator found

A little known shark that lives in waters off Antarctica is only the second creature known to science that hunts giant squid for food.

Sleeper sharks even appear to target the biggest species of large squid - the colossal squid, which is about double the size of the shark.

Valerie, a Domestic Android for only $59,000 and includes a 2 year warranty.

We have (tentatively) sold the first two androids!

We are now accepting orders for up to 4 complete and operational Valerie androids for delivery at Christmas of 2004.

Valerie is the most advanced android in the world having more degrees of freedom than any android shown up to now. She uses the AT&T speech synthesizer giving the most human-sounding voice available today. She is also easily the most anthropomorphic android available. She will have a high degree of artificial intelligence due to our proprietary AI software - and a generalized interface to the internet (the only existing super-intelligence).

CAN-SPAM means we can spam

A miniscule proportion of unsolicited commercial email complies with US Federal anti-spam laws introduced this month, according to a survey published yesterday.

Email security firm MX Logic found that of a random sample of over 1,000 unsolicited commercial emails received during the first week this year only THREE of the messages complied with the CAN-SPAM Act. The CAN-SPAM (Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing) Act went into effect on January 1.

Downloading Isn’t Stealing

Stealing is wrong. But downloading isn’t stealing. If I shoplift an album from my local record store, no one else can buy it. But when I download a song, no one loses it and another person gets it. There’s no ethical problem.

“90% of the major label’s catalog isn’t available for sale”: speech by Ken Hertz

“60 million people used Napster”: according to the New York Times

“50 million voted for Bush or Gore”: according to CNN

“A Harvard professor found that a $60 per year tax on broadband connections would make up for all lost music and movie sales”: see Terry Fisher, Promises to Keep. “Assuming that the ISPs pass through to consumers the entire amount of the tax, that average fee would rise by $4.88 per month” (p. 31) 4.88*12 ~= 59, so I say 60/yr.

Music Industry Puts Troops in the Streets
Quasi-legal squads raid street vendors

Though no guns were brandished, the bust from a distance looked like classic LAPD, DEA or FBI work, right down to the black "raid" vests the unit members wore. The fact that their yellow stenciled lettering read "RIAA" instead of something from an official law-enforcement agency was lost on 55-year-old parking-lot attendant Ceasar Borrayo.

The Recording Industry Association of America is taking it to the streets.

Tokyo Tech Envy

Topflight design, tiny size, and long battery life all surface first in gear marketed in Japan. Why don't we see this great stuff here? You've got techno-lust. You want to be the first to have the hottest technology, the kind that makes coworkers "oooh" and "aahhh." To find the most desirable stuff, though, you need to look east--to the Far East. These days, innovative electronics that make people coo show up first in Japan.

Richison's utility bill normally runs about $55. When he opened the new one last week, it was a shocker.

Madonna: Let's get rid of Bush

I am writing to you because the future I wish for my children is at risk. Our greatest risk is not terrorism and it's not Iraq or the "Axis of Evil." Our greatest risk is a lack of leadership, a lack of honesty and a complete lack of consciousness.

Madonna isn't a particularly prolific blogger. In fact we don't recall her ever posting anything directly to her web site before.
