Wine industry urges drinking, driving
France’s wine industry wants drivers to know: It’s OK to have a drink for the road. Or three.
THE $18 BILLION-A-YEAR wine industry is fighting back against a government campaign to discourage drunk driving. It claims the government is scaring people away from ordering a glass when they go out and points to a 15 percent drop in wine sales at restaurants.

As with most crazy ideas, the Simpsons thought of it first: Homer: "I'm feelin' low, Apu. You got any of that beer that has candy floating in it, you know, Skittlebrau?" Chinese Hold Camel Beauty Contest
Shiny hair. Upright humps. Sharp outfits. And definitely no swimsuit competition. If you're in the market for a beautiful camel, those are apparently the things you might want to consider. And in northern China, they're doing just that — holding a dromedary beauty contest as part of what is billed as "the first international camel festival."

Martin dons ‘Pink Panther’ role
Steve Martin has agreed to step into the role of Inspector Jacques Clouseau for MGM’s new “Pink Panther” movie. The original “Pink Panther” starred Peter Sellers as the bumbling French detective on the trail of a slippery jewel thief. Sellers kept the franchise going in four subsequent features, while Roger Moore and Alan Arkin also took turns in Clouseau’s trench coat.

COMDEX: 50,000 attendees expected
Quality over quantity is this year's COMDEX catch phrase. The technology show is only expecting about 50,000 attendees, compared with the 125,000 registered attendees reported by its organizer last year, but COMDEX 2003 will not be the convention of old when it opens today.

Turns out the Europeans can beat the best of Silicon Valley.

Jimmy Mardell, 25, of Stockholm, Sweden, was announced the winner Friday of Google's second annual Code Jam. He beat out more than 5,000 of the world's top programmers who signed up to compete in Google's contest to solve coding problems on deadline.

Party's over after theft of Ronald McDonald
The party's smiling, waving guest of honor had a familiar face, especially to the McDonald's employee in attendance.
Thursday morning, Cape Girardeau police recovered the stolen Ronald McDonald statue in the basement apartment on North Park Street. It was wearing a sock cap. A cigarette had been taped to Ronald McDonald's mouth, and his body was marked up with uncomplimentary graffiti.

Facility 1391: Israel's secret prison
It has been removed from maps and airbrushed from aerial photographs. But Facility 1391 certainly exists - you just have to ask the Palestinians and Lebanese who have been imprisoned and tortured there.

Faulty Bomb Means Dutch Targeting Error Hurts None
A Dutch jet fighter accidentally dropped a bomb near military observers during a NATO exercise in Norway, but a luckier second error meant it did not explode, Norway's armed forces said Friday.
