IBM builds new supercomputer


International Business Machines Corp. said Friday that it has built a supercomputer the size of a television based on microchip technology to be used in gaming consoles due out next year.

IBM said the supercomputer, which can perform 2 trillion calculations per second, is a small-scale prototype of the Blue Gene/L supercomputer that it is building for the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California.

Fla. Woman Crashes Into DMV Building


A 69-year-old woman crashed her car into the Department of Motor Vehicles building where she intended to renew her driver's license. Denise G. Butterfield said she was pulling into a handicapped parking space when her car suddenly jumped the curb and smacked into the front of the building Thursday.

Al-Jazeera hacker sentenced


A Los Angeles-area man has been fined and sentenced to community service for hacking into the Web site of satellite TV network Al-Jazeera during the U.S.-led war in Iraq and rerouting visitors to a page featuring an American flag and the motto "let freedom ring.''

At a sentencing hearing Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Howard Matz told Web designer John William Racine II: "I don't think of you as an evil person...but this was a crime. It wasn't just a childish prank."

Cocaine delivered to second school


Fifteen pounds of cocaine found in a ground-meat box at East Central Upper Elementary School came from the same shipment sent to an Ellisville school, where 15 pounds of cocaine was found in a ground meat box last week.

A cafeteria worker at the Hurley school found the cocaine in a box stamped Lot No. 021 early Monday morning.

An Australian hunter who catches crocodiles with his bare hands, has demanded chicken heads, a bamboo pole, and a boat to trap a tricky Hong Kong crocodile that has evaded local officials for two weeks.

Beauty spot is Italy nuclear dump


The Italian Government has selected a town in an area of outstanding natural beauty as the site for an underground nuclear waste dump. The small coastal town of Scanzano is in the extreme south of Italy. Experts say the waste will remain radioactive for up to a 150,000 years.
