MATRIX TRICKS


"The Matrix Revolutions," the third and final chapter in the mind-bending trilogy, opening Wednesday, picks up where "Reloaded" left off - midscene.

There's no time for back story, and the only explanation you'll be provided is the odd existential musing such as, "It happened because it was meant to happen."

Massive Cocaine Shipment Dumped


A British navy ship has forced Caribbean drug smugglers to ditch cocaine worth around $50 million at street prices.

Britain's Ministry of Defence says the HMS Manchester, which was on patrol in the central Caribbean, chased the traffickers' vessel, forcing the smugglers to jettison their cargo of 100 percent pure cocaine and race back to Colombian waters.

Florida student suspended for safer-sex costume


Osceola High School administrators thought a student's Halloween costume was more trick than treat. So they suspended her.

Lanessa Riobe, 16, was told to go home Friday after wearing a T-shirt decorated with condoms. Lanessa said she decided on the costume after seeing safe-sex commercials on television.

Teen reports shots at home; cops respond, nab 4-ton pot


More than 500 pounds of marijuana were seized by deputies Thursday in the garage of an East Side home after a resident there was shot at, the Pima County Sheriff's Department said.

Deputies found the pot after serving a search warrant in the 3700 block of South Hunters Run near Saguaro National Park east, said Deputy Dawn Barkman, a Sheriff's Department spokeswoman.

American gourmets pay 35,000 dollars for single Italian truffle


A single Tuscan truffle weighing in at 410 grammes (14.35 ounces) was sold this weekend near Florence for 35,000 dollars (30,000 euros), or more than six times its weight in gold, the event's organisers said.

German crowned world beard champion


A German sporting thick white sideburns arching from his ears to his chin has been crowned World Beard and Moustache Champion in the US state of Nevada. "I feel as happy as a pig in mud," said Berliner Karl Heinz Hille, who beat 130 contestants for the coveted title.

A woman punched a three-metre saltwater crocodile on the nose to free her teenage nephew from its jaws during an attack in Australia's Outback, a newspaper reported Monday.

Dolphin massacre turns sea blood red


Animal activists have released a video of Japanese fisherman hacking to death dolphins they had trapped at a small port. An American anti-whaling group trying to stop the massacre took footage of the recent hunt that shows blood-filled coves and several dead dolphins being brought ashore in boats.

Girls pummel man who exposed himself


A man described by authorities as a known sexual predator was chased through the streets of South Philadelphia by an angry crowd of Catholic high school girls, who kicked and punched him after he was tackled by neighbors, police said Friday.

MATRIX


is the latest data mining program to emerge from the government. This surveillance system combines information about individuals from government databases and private-sector data companies. It then makes those dossiers available for search by government officials and combs through the millions of files in a search for “anomalies” that may be indicative of terrorist or other criminal activity.
