Buddhist Monk Completes Seven-Year Run
A Buddhist priest dubbed the "marathon monk" has completed an ancient running ritual in the remote Japanese mountains that took seven years and covered a distance equivalent to a trip round the globe, wearing only a flowing white robe and flimsy straw sandals.
The 44-year-old monk, Genshin Fujinami, returned Thursday from his 24,800-mile spiritual journey in the Hiei mountains, a range of five peaks that rise above the ancient capital of Kyoto.

With two radically new redesigns serving as prototypes, IBM has been trying to gauge the reactions of customers, partners, analysts and journalists around the globe just like how automakers use the same venue (only filled out a bit more) every Spring with dealers, trade press and car enthusiasts. The goal is the same: hoping to gain a new understanding on just how the 10-year-old ThinkPad might evolve in terms of its design. If nothing else, the new designs underscore the current trend of how the lines between the desktops and notebooks have started to blur.

Within three years, most bank machines that dispense cash will run on the Windows operating system, according to a study published last week.
By 2005, 65 percent of bank ATMs (not including free-standing machines in places like convenience stores and casinos) in the United States will use a stripped-down version of Windows. About 12 percent of the machines will use the operating system by the end of this year, according to Gwenn Bezard, an analyst at market researcher Celent.

Der c't-Browsercheck auf heise Security demonstriert jetzt eine der am Montag gemeldeten Schwachstellen des Internet Explorer. Bei dieser Sicherheitslücke genügt ein voreiliger Klick auf eine URL, um ohne weitere Nachfragen ein beliebiges Programm aus dem Internet herunterzuladen, auf dem Rechner zu installieren und auch gleich auszuführen. Dabei kann es sich genausogut um einen Virus, einen 0190-Dialer oder ein Schadprogramm handeln, das alle erreichbaren Dateien löscht.
Wir konnten diesen Vorgang mit Internet Explorer 6.0 und 5.x mit allen am 18.9.2003 verfügbaren Patches reproduzieren.... Link (0 comments) ... Comment

Entdeckung in Südamerika: Anhand neuer Knochenfunde haben Forscher jetzt eine genauere Vorstellung vom größten bekannten Nagetier gewonnen.
Paläontologen haben in Venezuela versteinerte Überreste von zwei Tieren einer Art «Riesen-Meerschweinchen» gefunden. Die Größe der prähistorischen Nagetiere übersteigt das eher handliche Format ihrer heute lebenden Verwandten um ein Vielfaches.

Fazit der Forscher: Affen lehnen Ungerechtigkeit ab. Das berichten die amerikanischen Wissenschaftler im britischen Fachblatt "Nature" (Bd. 425, S. 297). Dies Ergebnis aus Verhaltenstests deute darauf hin, dass nicht nur Menschen, sondern auch andere soziale Primaten Ungerechtigkeiten ablehnen.
