Freedom Party decimated in Austrian elections
The far-right Freedom Party in Austria has suffered a crushing defeat in the country's general election - down to 10 percent of the vote. Its coalition partner in the outgoing administration, the Conservative Peoples Party has claimed a sweeping victory but still short of an overall majority which will require talks to build a new coalition.

Joerg Haider's far-right Freedom Party was dealt a humiliating blow yesterday as its share of the national vote collapsed in Austria's parliamentary election and a former coalition partner swept to victory. The Freedom Party and Mr. Haider, its mercurial inspiration and sometime admirer of Adolf Hitler's policies, provoked international outrage three years ago when it won 27 per cent of the popular vote and ended up in a coalition government with the mainstream, conservative People's Party.

Groteske um verschwundenen Klagenfurter Wahlleiter
Das Wahlergebnis aus der Stadt Klagenfurt ließ gestern Abend ungewöhnlich lange auf sich warten. Es sickerte durch, dass ein Wahlleiter mitsamt der Urne aus dem Wahlkreis von Landeshauptmann Jörg Haider (FPÖ) verschwunden sein sollte. Die Dementis des Magistratsdirektors stehen nun gegen die Aussagen aus der Bezirkswahlbehörde.
