Stair-Climbing Wheelchair Works, FDA Staff Says
Johnson & Johnson's iBOT wheelchair, which climbs stairs and traverses tough terrain, was effective in a clinical trial, U.S. regulatory staff said ahead of Wednesday's key review of the product. The iBOT, conceived by prolific inventor Dean Kamen, uses gyroscopes to mimic the way people maintain their balance. The chair can maneuver up and down stairs and curbs, go into four-wheel drive mode to navigate beaches or grass and rise on two wheels to bring a user to eye level.

One-third of the 30 billion e-mails sent worldwide each day are spam
That's 10 billion daily pitches for herbal Viagra, Nigerian scams, and genital-enlarging creams piling up in our inboxes. Neither legislation nor litigation against spammers has stemmed the tide, and they're not going to have much of an effect in the future, either. It's time to give up: Despite the best efforts of legislators, lawyers, and computer programmers, spam has won. Spam is killing e-mail.

Top 100 albums of the 80's
It's said that the 1980s are responsible for the worst fashion, fads, and music of any decade of the 20th century. But as we see the decade recycled and updated with post-millennial minimalism, it's becoming clear that the 1980s had more to offer than we've given them credit for. As the calendar left the classless earthtones and polyester of the 1970s behind, musicians looked to the future for inspiration in new genres. With this feature, Pitchfork seeks to prove that, amidst the smooth-jazz of Kenny G, the vanilla soul of Hall & Oates, and the white-trash hair-rock of Warrant, lay a revolution in sound.

Flatulence: How To Prevent It
How to deal with farting
You denied it, blamed it on the guy next to you, you even blamed it on grandma when she was out of earshot. Most of the time, it smells bad and it sounds funny, but why go through so much restiveness over something as natural as farting? Okay, the abovementioned facts are reason enough, but let us at least dissipate the notion that farting, or Flatus, is bad.

Ted Nugent Wanted For Michigan Gubernatorial Run
If some Michigan residents have their way, Ted Nugent will be running for governor of the state in 2006.
Following the recent election of Jennifer Granholm as Michigan governor, radio station WOOD-AM in Grand Rapids asked its listeners who they'd like to see oppose her in four years. The survey is still going on, but Nugent has been named in about 90 percent of the responses every day, beating out others such as speaker of the Michigan House Rick Johnson and former Lieutenant Governor Dick Posthumus.

Ice-cream
Smaller box, same price
The half-gallon ice cream container — the sweet standard of grocery store freezers for decades — is quietly starting to shrink.
While manufacturers in recent years have reduced the package size of everything from candy bars to dish detergent, the traditional ice cream ‘‘brick’’ remained what it was — the half-gallon.

California Tree-Sitter, Says He Will Have Oak Moved
A county leader said he would try to save a 400-year-old giant oak by moving it out of the proposed path of a four-lane road, but a man who has been living in the tree said he was afraid it would die in the move. John Quigley, 42, has been sitting in the tree for most of November in an attempt to protect it. He's drawn sympathy, home-cooked meals and a steady stream of visitors who don't want it cut down.
