Blasts Rock Russian Soccer Stadium


Two explosions rocked a stadium Sunday about an hour after a soccer match in the southern Russian city of Vladikavkaz, but there were no immediate reports of casualties. The explosions occurred two to three seconds apart at the city's central Spartak stadium, said an official in the local Interior Ministry, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Vladikavkaz, the capital of the republic of North Ossetia, is near Chechnya.

Former Italian PM convicted of murder


A court in Italy has sentenced the former prime minister Giulio Andreotti to 24 years in prison over the 1979 murder of a journalist - overturning a previous ruling. Andreotti, seven times Italy's prime minister, had been cleared by a lower court three years ago.

A new cache of chilling al-Qaida training videos has been discovered in Afghanistan in which terrorists speaking English simulate the seizure of what appears to be a building full of Westerners, suggesting a hotel might be Osama bin Laden's next target.

Self-destruct DVD


I suppose fans of the superspy James Bond are no strangers to explosive gadgets, but a self-destructing DVD!? MGM sent out over over 5,000 promo discs this week as a preview for the upcoming Bond flick Die Another Day, but there's a catch. If you want to check out the 25-odd minutes of cool material included on the DVD, you may want to stand back after you put it in your player. As the tag on the mailer warns, "Once removed from its packaging, the DVD will self-destruct in 36 hours!"

Ants invade iBook


Has anyone had this problem? I hope not . . . After the first rain of the year, the ants outside were restless (and homeless). My wife had left her ibook on the mantle charging overnight. The next morning we noticed a large number of ants milling around it.

Japan Government May Drop Windows


The Japanese government will consider replacing Microsoft Corp's Windows, used in much of its computer networks, with another operating system to bolster security.

The safety of computer networks is under scrutiny as Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's administration presses on towards a long-held goal of "e-government", which would allow citizens to deal with government agencies via the Internet.

Major slick threatens Spanish coast


Fears are growing that a stricken oil tanker off Spain's north western coast could break up spilling thousands of gallons of oil into the sea and causing an environmental catastrophe. The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) warns that if all 77,000 tonnes of the Prestige's cargo were to leak, the spill would be twice the size of the catastrophic Exxon Valdez spill off Alaska.

India marvels at 'miracle chapati'


Hundreds of Christian pilgrims and other curious onlookers have been making their way to a church in Bangalore in India to see a chapati which has the image of Christ burnt into it. The chapati - a loaf of unleavened bread - is one of dozens that Shella Anthony bakes in her oven in Bangalore every day. But this one she thought was different.
