Mouse fresco 'challenges Mickey'
A 700-year-old fresco bearing an uncanny resemblance to Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse has been discovered in Austria. The mouse figure was unearthed by an art historian working on the church in the southern village of Malta.

Norwegian man fined £260 for urinating in the sea
Frode Abelvik, 38, urinated from a pier after leaving a late night bar in Arendal this summer.
He had first tried to get back into the bar but was refused and there are no public toilets in the town.

"Noisy light" is new key to encryption
Scientists at Northwestern University say they have harnessed the properties of light to encrypt information into code that can be cracked only one way: by breaking the physical laws of nature. This high-speed quantum cryptography method allowed the scientists to send encrypted data over a fiber-optic line at 250mbps (megabits per second), which the researchers said was more than 1,000 times faster than what was achievable with existing quantum technology.

World's fastest computer simulates earth
A Japanese supercomputer that studies the climate and other aspects of the Earth maintained its ranking as the world's fastest computer, according to a study released Friday.
The Earth Simulator in Yokohama, Japan, performs 35.86 trillion calculations per second -- more than 4 1/2 times greater than the next-fastest machine.

Lost Doctor Who show revived
A legendary Doctor Who episode written by the late cult author Douglas Adams is to get its first showing next year - 24 years after it was shelved. The episode, called Shada, was described as "the greatest Doctor Who story never shown" and began filming in 1979 but production was halted by industrial action.

Arnold's Marijuana Moment
Arnold Schwarzenegger encouraged the director of "Pumping Iron," the documentary that launched him in Hollywood 25 years ago, to re-release it unedited - including a marijuana-smoking scene.
"I would refuse to wipe out that record or change it or alter it because of image's sake," Schwarzenegger said this week. "That would not be true to the filmmaker."

Russian official says nuclear material has disappeared from country's plants
The head of Russia's nuclear regulatory agency says small amounts of weapons- and reactor-grade nuclear materials have disappeared from the country's atomic facilities.
''Instances of the loss of nuclear materials have been recorded, but what the quantity is is another question,'' Yuri Vishnyevsky, head of Gosatomnadzor, said Thursday. ''Of those situations that we can talk about in actuality, they involve either grams of weapons-grade or kilograms of the usual uranium used in atomic power plants.''
