Beulenpest in New York?


In New York wurde ein Ehepaar aus dem Südwesten der USA mit Verdacht auf Beulenpest in ein Krankenhaus eingeliefert. Bei dem 53-jährigen Touristen fiel ein erster Test auf Beulenpest positiv aus. Der Leiter des Gesundheitsamtes spricht von dem ersten Fall in New York seit etwa 100 Jahren.

Steve Martin to host 75th Oscars


Actor Steve Martin will host the 75th anniversary Oscars in Los Angeles next year. Martin takes up the role for the second time, taking over from Whoopi Goldberg.

"I'm very pleased to be hosting the Oscars again, because fear and nausea always make me lose weight," said Martin.

Irises, voices give away terrorists


The United States is compiling digital dossiers of the irises, fingerprints, faces and voices of terrorism suspects and using the information to track their movements and screen foreigners trying to enter the country. Since January, military and intelligence operatives have collected the identifying data on prisoners in Afghanistan and at the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. There are also plans to extend the collection process to Iraq in the event of a U.S. invasion.

Singer Bobby Brown jailed in Atlanta

Copy protection on CDs is 'worthless'


The technology built into some CDs to stop people copying them is futile, according to a computer scientist who has put today's antipiracy systems under the microscope. He believes the continual software and hardware upgrades issued by the makers of computer CD drives and audio CD players render copy protection systems pointless in the long run.

Tiny chips weigh heavily on environment

A microchip's energy and material requirements stand out in comparison with those for an automobile. The study notes that one passenger car needs about 3,300 pounds of fossil fuel. Although that's far greater than what’s needed for a microchip, the study says that the ratio of the manufacturing phase's fossil fuel and chemical inputs to the weight of the final product is about 2-to-1 for a car, but 630-to-1 for a microchip.

Federal Agents Make Huge Drug Bust In Fort Wayne


A major discovery in Texas leads to what possibly is the largest drug bust ever in Fort Wayne. US Customs officers stopped two trucks carrying ceramic pots at the Texas/Mexican border. Drug sniffing dogs alerted them that something illegal was onboard. Turns many of the pots had marijuana stuffed inside. Authorities say the pot was baked inside the pots, then sealed with a lead coating to hide the drug as it went through customs.
