- Austria's chancellor called Monday for new elections to end a political crisis after four key leaders of the Freedom Party resigned, saying a conflict with far-rightist Joerg Haider had made the party's work impossible.

Haider keeps options open
Haider told Austrian television on Monday he would not stand as party chairman, saying he was the wrong man after leading a rank-and-file revolt that ousted Vice Chancellor and party chairwoman Susanne Riess-Passer and paved the way for new elections as early as November.

Austria's Right-wing split

Jörg Haider, the constant risk factor in Austrian politics, has brought down the government. Those who have been smoking the oft-cited peace pipe with the Carinthian governor have had it blow up in their faces. But, this time, even Haider has been hurt. He has demolished the very government he helped build and it is more obvious than ever that he cannot be relied upon.

Haider to Lead Freedom Party Again
The success of the Haider-led Freedom Party in 1999 elections generated anxiety abroad due to anti-foreigner and anti-European comments made by party officials and to Haider's remarks in support of Adolf Hitler's employment policy. The European Union briefly slapped sanctions on Austria in 2000 to protest that party's role in the government.

Haider to Lead Freedom Party Again
Austria's Freedom Party nominated far-rightist Joerg Haider on Wednesday to be its leader once again following a party feud that led to the resignation of key leaders and the collapse of the governing coalition. Haider's nomination comes less than 2 1/2 years after he resigned from the post as part of a deal that brought the party into a coalition with the centrist People's Party. His confirmation as party chief at a special convention Sept. 20 is considered certain.
