Austrian Chancellor Calls for Vote to End Crisis
Mr. Schüssel said today that he would meet with the leaders of his conservative People's Party on Tuesday to recommend that Parliament be dissolved as of Sept. 19, with new elections coming by the end of November or early December instead of a year from now. The current coalition would remain in place for the present.

Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel severed his coalition with Joerg Haider's far-right Freedom Party Monday, calling elections after Haider ousted the vice chancellor in a bid to retake control of his party. Austrian Chancellor Calls for New Elections
Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel said Monday his conservatives would quit the coalition with Joerg Haider's Freedom Party, paving the way for early elections after a power struggle in the far-right party. "Tomorrow evening I will recommend to my party that parliament be dissolved at the earliest possible date, which is September 19," said the chancellor, who is also chairman of his People's Party.
