Austrian army withdraws 'sexist' tank advert

The Austrian army has withdrawn a recruitment advertisement, which featured attractive young women chasing after a tank, begging for a "joy ride", after women's groups said the video was offensive.

To that end, the pun in the young soldier's question was "fully intended", an army spokesman admitted. "Our clip is so dorky it's brilliant," said Col Johann Millonig, from the army's marketing department.

Kommerziell und privat genutzte Funk-Überwachungskameras weisen massive Sicherheitslücken auf. Das ergaben Recherchen von Niedersachsen 19.30 und der ARD-Tagesthemen. Die bundesweit tausendfach eingesetzten Kameras könnten ohne größeren technischen Aufwand unbemerkt von Dritten angezapft werden. Alleine in Hannover sind nach Schätzungen von Fachleuten Hunderte solcher Kameras in Einzelhandel, Gewerbe und bei Privatleuten im täglichen Einsatz. Dabei handelt es sich um sogenannte analoge Funkkameras, die ihre Daten kabellos auf einen Bildschirm übertragen. Die so übermittelten Daten können mithilfe eines Funkempfängers von Unbefugten unbemerkt aufgezeichnet und verbreitet werden. Solche Empfänger werden bereits für weniger als 100 Euro angeboten und können von jedermann gekauft werden.

On June 8, 1924, George Mallory and Andrew Irvine left their camp less than a kilometer from the summit of Mount Everest on a mission to be the first mountaineers to ascend the world's highest peak (8,850 meters). They were never to be heard from again. Whether either man reached the summit—almost three decades before Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's historic 1953 climb—has been an open question for nearly 86 years.

Although more than half a dozen expeditions have gone to Everest in subsequent years to determine the outcome of Mallory and Irvine's expedition (a 1999 search turned up Mallory's body), none have returned with definitive answers. The key to solving the mystery, many climbers say, is finding Irvine's remains and with it the missing Vest Pocket Kodak (VPK) camera he was supposedly carrying with him on that fateful journey.

Google Toolbar caught tracking users when 'disabled'

Google has updated its browser toolbar after the application was caught tracking urls even when specifically "disabled" by the user.

In a Monday blog post, Harvard professor and noted Google critic Ben Edelmen provided video evidence of the Google toolbar transmitting data back to the Mountain View Chocolate Factory after he chose to disable the application in the browser window he was currently using.

On Monday, when we reported that the prolific hacker geohot had successfully penetrated the previously impervious PlayStation 3 gaming console, readers were understandably skeptical.

After all, the 20-year-old readily admitted his hack wasn't reliable, and he provided no evidence he was able to do some of the things modders love to do most, such as run arbitrary code or peel open the device's synergistic processing elements to take a peak at its most prized internal elements.
